# Choosing positions

Positions are an investor's exposure to a particular cryptocurrency or multiple cryptocurrencies.

There are two types of positions: long and short.

### Long

When a trader goes long, they purchase a Perpetual contract with the anticipation that the underlying asset's value will appreciate in the future. Rather than purchasing and holding the actual underlying asset, traders obtain artificial exposure to the asset.

<mark style="color:yellow;">To go 10x long $1,000 USD worth of BTC-USD Perpetuals contracts he buys: $1,000 USD / $50,000 USD / BTC = 0.02 BTC.</mark>

### Short

If a trader goes short, they sell a Perpetual contract, anticipating that the underlying asset's value will decrease in the future. Rather than selling the actual underlying asset, traders sell artificial exposure to the asset.

<mark style="color:yellow;">To go 10x short $1,000 USD worth of BTC-USD Perpetuals contracts he sells: $1,000 USD / $50,000 USD / BTC = 0.02 BTC.</mark>

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://prodigyfi.gitbook.io/perps-user-guide/positions/choosing-positions.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
